PageRank explained

PageRank is a link analysis algorithm which gives a weighting to a website / webpage. Its a number representing how important a site is from how much support it receives, in the form of hyperlinks. A page that is linked to by many pages with high PageRank receives a high rank itself. If there are no links to a web page there is no support for that page.

Displayed numbers are scaled logarithmically, meaning a PageRank of 4 is rated 10 times larger than PageRank(PR) of 3. Google.com has PR10, google.co.uk has PR8, a newly indexed site with no links to it has PR0 but this may not display if it has not been live since a PageRank update.

PageRank is a trademark of Google but other search engines and similar patents exist for calculating a page’s importance. The higher PageRank the better.

Search engines result page’s or SERP’s will be updated continually and not just when a displayed PageRank updates.

PageRank is computed continuously; so at any given time, a url in Google’s system has up-to-date PageRank as a result of running the computation with the inputs to the algorithm. From time-to-time, that internal PageRank value is exported so that it’s visible to Google Toolbar users.

Roughly every 3-4 months we take a snapshot of PageRank values and export them so that the new values are visible

So in terms if improving your PageRank, you want sites with numbers to link to you and the more the better, however this is only one small part of search engine optimisation. If they are nofollow links they wont help at all, and if they are from unrelated sites, its not going to help you overall much either.

Top 5 SEO plugins for Wordpress

Here is a tried and self-tested list of great Wordpress plugins with personal evaluations:

All in One SEO Pack - My first plugin to install on a Wordpress site, allows the editing of descriptions, keywords, and setting how you want your titles created, lots of fine tuning if you want to, if not, it has a good default setup that will leave your site in good hands as it is.

  • Automatically optimizes your titles for search engines
  • Generates META keywords automatically, or you can enter specific ones.
  • Avoids the typical duplicate content found on Wordpress blogs by adding noindex to archives, categories etc.

SEO Master - A lot like All in one SEO pack and contains the following modules:

  • Meta Module
  • Nofollow Module
  • Noindex Module
  • AutoLinker Module

I disable all but the nofollow module, since the All in one SEO pack does the rest, and is better at it. The nofollow module allows you to choose whether to have nofollow on links in your current post or not, as well as global settings for the site, like homepage and footer. Very useful and haven’t seen others that allow you to vary nofollow on or off like this.

Google XML Sitemaps - Automatically creates and updates your sitemap, while notifying the search engines of the change to your site also, a simple and great plugin thats easy to work.

Sociable - Adds links on your posts or pages to popular social bookmarking sites like Digg, Sphinn, Mixx, StumbleUpon and many many others. You can choose what sites and how many links are included from a large list, small icons and presented well!

Headspace2 - A lot like the All in one SEO Pack but with one amazing feature; auto-tag generation, not meta-tags but the tags you see below the post! This feature worked well and was great to use, but I had problems with the rest of the plugin. Despite setting the format I wanted the titles of my posts in, it would put my blog title before all of this, as if it wasn’t editable, which I’m sure it was.. After exhausting all avenues I went back to All in one SEO pack, but if you could get this working properly, you would have a really great alternative to it.

Launching of SEO Google Tips

Hey guys,

Basically I’m a learned individual who reads a lot, and now wants to put that knowledge into practise. SEO has always been a big interest to me because of its importance; how well your page ranks on search engines  almost completely effects how succesful it will be.

I’m going to record statistically for you how well this site does in page ranking, phrase ranking, traffic, back links etc as well as other projects along the way. I will make my posts specific to their title also, not generalising here, as i believe that is most efficient. You can expect daily posts here, so join me by subscribing to my feed or just checking back here now and again, also welcome any email and communication.
